The Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) strategy teaches students to monitor their comprehension while reading and to work cooperatively to gain a deeper understanding. Before, during, and after reading students work with a partner or in small groups to: Preview the Text. Clicks or Clunks.

Strategic reading. How: Day One. Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. Put the questions on one side of the page, write the answers on the other. Day Two. Do another survey of the reading to remind yourself of the key points. Go back to your sheet from day one. Cover your answers and ask yourself the questions again.

Understanding and learning from academic texts involves purposeful, strategic reading. Adolescent readers, particularly poor readers, benefit from explicit instruction in text comprehension strategies, such as text preview, summarization, and comprehension monitoring, as part of a comprehensive reading program.
